#30 Ghiordes Circa 1730 230x145cms. Condition is
even wear, flexible not brittle, no problems. A
workshop product
from the royal
stream of weaving
(as opposed to
tribal or village,
nomadic or peasant
rugs) showing the
highly florid Ottoman
Court style of
the time. Look
at the orange and
pink together! Realistic
flora imitating
the royal gardeners’
formal landscapes
include carnations,
tulips, and hyacinths. So
influential on
the western mind
was this court
style of weaving
that the symmetrical
knot became known
in English as the
Ghiordes Knot
and a separate
Orientalist School
grew from this
period. |
